Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

What is the purpose of the Gospels? Luke spells it out for us here, "so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings that you received."

Luke, along with Matthew, Mark, and John, have indirectly presented the good news to us. Jesus directly came to deliver the good news himself, as he is the good news, but somehow, we, the people of today, need to know the good news too. And this is possible through the Gospels.

This is God's word given to us. And many of us don't know how to use this amazing gift to the fullest. I didn't really know where to start until recently, but it's amazing to see how God speaks to me through these words. He gives me exactly what I need to hear and understand. Most of the time, it's frustrating to try to listen for God's signs and that's often the case with Scripture too.

But Jesus is God and God is the Word and today's word tells us:

"he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go free,

and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."

God gives each of us EXACTLY what we NEED. And we may not know what we need until we're actually given it.

That's how I feel about reading the Bible. Yes, it's hard to read. Yes, it's hard to pay attention during the readings at Mass. But yes, God is speaking to us. Yes, God is sharing truth.

And we gotta listen.
